Oliver Aubrey Seymour Stewart (born 18 October 1982) is a British politician who currently serves as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Member of Parliament for Colchester.

Early life

He was born in 1982, the son of General Sir Alexander Stewart, a scion of the aristocratic Stewart of Somerset branch of the Royal House of Stuart, and his wife Lady Mary Teresa Lorraine Onslow, daughter of William Arthur Bampfylde Onslow, 6th Earl of Onslow and Hon. Pamela Louisa Eleanor Dillon. Stewart is a first cousin twice removed to Charles Stewart, 18th Duke of Somerset.

He is the great-nephew of former US President and UK politician William Stewart, 16th Duke of Somerset, and his grandfather, Lord Nicholas Stewart, was the younger son of Charles Josslyn Seymour Stewart, 15th Duke of Somerset.

He was educated at Eton College.

Political career

Stewart became MP for Colchester in November 2016 after winning a by-election, the same time as his cousin the Duke of Somerset won the West Sussex by-election.

During the November Conservative Party leadership election, Stewart is noted for having supported Samuel Faith, who won, over his cousin the Duke, who finished in second place. Asked why he supported Faith over his cousin, Stewart replied, "in politics family is irrelevant and what matters is the policies."

Since Samuel Faith's victory in the general election, Stewart has served as Chancellor of the Exchequer whilst his cousin serves as Home Secretary.

Personal life

Stewart lives in London with his wife Marjorie.
