Dame Helen Elizabeth Marshall, QPM (born 7 April 1963) is a British Politician and Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Home Department. A member of the Conservative Party, She serves as the Member of Parliament(MP) for . Marshall is the first female Home Secretary, and is the first female Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service.
Early life and education
Helen Marshall was born in London on 7 April 1963, the daughter of Tony Marshall b.1924 (a police constable) and Liz Marshall.Her brother is the public relations executive Roland Marshall, chairman of Business for New Europe.
She was educated at Cheltenham Ladies' College, an independent school in Gloucestershire,and from 1979 to 1981 at Queen's College, London, an independent day school for girls in London, followed by Edinburgh University where she read History.
Police career
Marshall became a member of the Metropolitan Police Service in 1980 as a Police Constable. She was one of the few women constables on the force, patrolling the Greater London. She became an Inspector in the Territorial Directorate in 1986. By 1990, Marshall became the Borough Commander of Hillingdon.
Marshall, under the direction of Commissioner Sir Bradley Ashforth, QPM, became the Assistant Commissioner, in charge of the Territorial Directorate. Under the Prime Ministership of David Ryans, She became the first woman to hold the office of Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service, where she commanded over 10,000 men and women.
Political career
In 2015, Prime Minister Julia Dzien (deceased) appointed Helen Marshall as the Secretary of State for the Home Department.
In 2016, Prime Minister Nicolette FitzRoy re-instated Helen Marshall as the Secretary of State for the Home Department.
Personal life
Marshall has openly publised that she is a lesbian. She is also the first lesiban Home Secretary and Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service.
Helen Marshall also serves as the Trustee of the Police Roll of Trust.
